Nigeria at 66: Celebrating Our Heritage, Our People and Our Excellence

As the green and white flag rises once again, Nigerians at home and across the world come together to celebrate 66 years of independence — 66 years of resilience, culture, courage, creativity and an enduring belief in the promise of our nation.

On behalf of the Nigerian Association of London and Area (NALA), we wish Nigerians in London, across Canada and around the world a very Happy Independence Day!

Nigeria is more than a place on the map. It is a people rich in history, languages, traditions, values and dreams. From our music and fashion to our food, dance, art, storytelling and entrepreneurial spirit, Nigerian culture continues to make an unmistakable impact around the world.

Our cultural diversity remains one of our greatest strengths.

Across hundreds of ethnic groups and languages, we carry traditions that have been passed from one generation to another. Even as many Nigerians build new lives across the diaspora, our heritage continues to connect us — reminding us where we come from while inspiring us to contribute meaningfully to the communities we now call home.

Celebrating the Nigerian Spirit

Independence Day is also a moment to reflect.

Our country’s journey has included challenges, but Nigerians have consistently demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to adapt, rebuild, innovate and rise.

From business and technology to healthcare, education, arts, entertainment, sports and community leadership, Nigerians continue to distinguish themselves across the globe.

Here in London and surrounding communities, we see that same spirit every day.

We see Nigerians building businesses, pursuing careers, raising families, volunteering, mentoring young people, serving their communities and creating opportunities for others.

That is something worth celebrating.

It is also why NALA remains committed to building a stronger and more connected Nigerian community while promoting our culture and creating opportunities for Nigerians to thrive.

A Night of Recognition, Culture and Community

This year, our Independence celebration becomes even more special as we bring our community together for the NALA Gala Awards Night & Nigeria’s Independence Celebration 2026.

Under the theme:

“Celebrating Our People, Our Culture and Excellence,”

the evening will celebrate not only Nigeria’s independence, but also the individuals and community leaders whose dedication, leadership and contributions continue to make a difference.

Join us on Saturday, October 4, 2026, beginning at 5:00 PM, at:

Four Points by Sheraton London
1150 Wellington Road South
London, Ontario N6E 1M3

Guests can look forward to an inspiring evening featuring awards and recognition of outstanding individuals and community leaders, vibrant cultural performances showcasing Nigeria’s rich heritage, dinner, networking and meaningful community connections.

It will be a night to celebrate where we come from, recognize the people making an impact today and look toward the future we can build together.

Passing Our Heritage to the Next Generation

Our Independence celebration is also about our children and future generations.

For Nigerians living in Canada, preserving our heritage requires intentionality. Our children should know the stories, values, languages, traditions and sacrifices that shaped the generations before them.

They should experience the colours of our traditional clothing, the rhythm of our music, the richness of our food, the beauty of our languages and the strength of our communal values.

When we celebrate Nigerian culture openly and proudly, we give the next generation permission to embrace every part of who they are.

At the same time, we encourage them to take the very best of their heritage — resilience, community, hard work, hospitality, excellence and determination — and use it to make a positive contribution wherever life takes them.

Stronger Together

As Nigeria celebrates another year of independence, may this season remind us that nation-building does not happen only within national borders.

Every Nigerian has an opportunity to contribute.

We contribute when we support one another.
We contribute when we mentor young people.
We contribute when we build ethical and successful businesses.
We contribute when we volunteer and serve.
We contribute when we preserve our culture.
And we contribute when we represent Nigeria with excellence wherever we are.

There is much to celebrate, much to learn from and still much work ahead.

But wherever Nigerians gather — from Lagos to London, Ontario and across the world — we carry with us the strength, vibrancy and unmistakable spirit of our people.

This Independence Day, let us celebrate our people, our culture and our excellence.

Let us honour those who came before us, recognize those creating impact today and inspire the generation coming after us.

And above all, let us continue building a stronger community and a brighter tomorrow — together.

Happy 66th Independence Day, Nigeria!

From all of us at the Nigerian Association of London and Area (NALA).

NALA — Stronger Together.
