Members of the Nigerian Association of London and Area (NALA) were pleased to attend “Endless Possibilities: The Future of Black Entrepreneurship in Canada,” a Black History Month event hosted by the London Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce and the London Black Heritage Council.
The event brought together Black entrepreneurs, business leaders, community organizations and changemakers for a morning of meaningful conversations about entrepreneurship, economic opportunity, mentorship and the future of Black-owned businesses in Canada.
For NALA, being present at conversations like this is important. Our Nigerian community is filled with entrepreneurs, professionals, business owners and emerging leaders who contribute significantly to the economic and social fabric of London and the surrounding area.
The event provided another opportunity to connect, learn and strengthen relationships across London’s broader Black business community.
The morning opened with a moving performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by Raquel Dahlberg and Marque Smith, followed by conversations focused on both the progress being made and some of the barriers Black entrepreneurs continue to experience.
With Carl Cadogan of the London Black Heritage Council facilitating the conversation and Nadia McCormack-McIntyre delivering the keynote address, several important themes stood out.
Opening Access to Knowledge and Opportunities
One important takeaway was the need to make information and opportunities more accessible to Black entrepreneurs.
Business events, funding opportunities, professional networks, training programs and other resources can only create impact when entrepreneurs know they exist and understand how to access them.
For organizations such as NALA, this reinforces the importance of continuing to share relevant opportunities within our community and helping connect Nigerian entrepreneurs and professionals with resources that can support their growth.
Increasing Awareness of Grants and Business Resources
The conversations also highlighted the importance of increasing awareness around grants, funding programs and entrepreneurship resources.
There is no shortage of talent, creativity and ambition within the Black community. However, entrepreneurs also need access to the right information, capital, networks and business knowledge to successfully build and scale sustainable ventures.
Creating clearer pathways to these resources can help more entrepreneurs move from ideas to sustainable businesses and from small businesses to growing enterprises.
Mentorship and Representation Matter
Another powerful theme was the importance of mentorship.
Seeing successful Black entrepreneurs, professionals and community leaders creates possibilities for others.
Access to experienced mentors can also help emerging entrepreneurs navigate challenges, avoid costly mistakes, build stronger networks and gain the confidence needed to pursue bigger opportunities.
By celebrating successful entrepreneurs within our city and creating opportunities for them to connect with the next generation, we strengthen the entire business ecosystem.
Building an Economically Stronger Community
NALA’s participation in events such as Endless Possibilities reflects our commitment to building relationships and ensuring that members of the Nigerian community are connected to opportunities across London and beyond.
Our role as a community organization goes beyond celebrating our culture and heritage. It also includes helping our members connect, participate, grow and contribute within the wider community.
We encourage Nigerian entrepreneurs, professionals and aspiring business owners in London and surrounding communities to continue seeking opportunities to network, learn, collaborate and build meaningful partnerships.
The possibilities are indeed endless when communities share knowledge, open doors for one another and intentionally create opportunities for the next generation.
NALA looks forward to continuing to work alongside community partners and organizations committed to supporting entrepreneurship, leadership and economic empowerment in London.
